Why Are Categories Important in an Experience – and Why Do You Need Them?

In this article, we’ll explain why selecting a category for each experience is essential, and how it helps you improve the structure, visibility, and presentation of your content.

  1. Categories are mandatory
  2. Why are categories important?
    1. Similar Experiences
    2. Printed Weekly Program
    3. Google SEO

✅ Categories Are Mandatory

Every experience must be assigned a category.

You can choose from 135 predefined categories that help you organize your experiences meaningfully and consistently.

👉 It’s not possible to create your own categories – simply select the one that best fits your experience.

💡 Tip:
If the experience is actually general hotel information (e.g. check-in, breakfast times, weather), please select the “Information” category.

📌 Why Are Categories Important?

Categories serve several functions – technical, visual, and organizational:

1. 🔗 Similar Experiences

Experiences with the same category are automatically shown as “Similar Experiences” in the detail view of each experience.

Example:
A guest views your "Wine Hike" experience and is also shown a wine tasting – because both fall under the “Culinary” category.

👉 If you prefer not to show similar experiences, you can disable this in
Settings > Advanced Settings.

2. 🖨️ Printed Weekly Program

Categories also form the basis for your PDF exports in Giggle – such as your printed weekly program.

You can:

  • Include or exclude specific categories

  • Create custom printed schedules – for example, a children’s weekly program or sports-only program

3. 🔎 Google SEO & Visibility

Categories help search engines (like Google) better understand and index your experience.

This directly contributes to improved visibility in search results.

⚠️ Note:
Experiences categorized as “Information” are automatically excluded from Google indexing.

✅ Summary

Categories are more than just a required field – they’re a powerful tool for better organization, visibility, and presentation of your experiences.

They help you:

  • Automatically show similar experiences

  • Structure your content in print exports

  • Improve your Google ranking

Please note: Categories are not the same as streams.
While categories help you structure and organize your experiences internally and for Google, streams control where and how these experiences are displayed to your guests.
